Two completely different problems arrive wearing the same sentence. One is a video that thousands of people saw and nobody reacted to. The other is a video almost nobody saw at all. They feel identical from the inside, they have nothing in common underneath, and the fixes for one do nothing for the other.
So before anything else, open the post and look at the view count. That single number decides which half of this page applies to you. The broader playbook for lifting likes across an account is in how to get more likes on TikTok; this page is about diagnosing one post that went wrong.
Case one: plenty of views, almost no likes
This is the better problem. Distribution is working. TikTok showed the video to strangers and they watched enough of it to count, then scrolled on without reacting. That is a content signal and it is specific enough to act on.
Put a number on it before you start changing things. Likes divided by views, under 2%, is where “not getting likes” is a real finding rather than a feeling. The bands and the platform averages are in what counts as a good TikTok engagement rate. The usual causes:
- They left before the idea arrived. A like is decided near the end of a watch. If the point of the video is at second twelve, everyone who left at second three was never going to like it, no matter how good second twelve was.
- The video kept going after it was done. Completion rate falls off a cliff when a video has delivered its payoff and continues anyway. Trim to the last useful frame.
- It reached the wrong people. A broad trending sound pulls in views from outside your niche. Those viewers watch briefly out of momentum and have no reason to react. Views up, likes flat, and nothing wrong with the video.
- There was nothing to react to. Videos that inform cleanly and provoke nothing get watched and forgotten. An opinion, a question or a surprise gives the viewer a reason to tap.
- The like was already spent. If your last five posts are variations on the same clip, people who liked the first one do not feel the need to like the fifth.
Case two: barely any views either
If the video is at 200 views and eleven likes, the likes are fine. The rate is over 5%. You do not have a likes problem, you have a distribution problem, and chasing likes will waste the next month.
The honest starting point is that low views do not mean you broke a rule. TikTok says this explicitly in its For You feed eligibility standards, which also set out the categories that get held back from recommendation even when they break no rule at all. That document is the closest thing to an official answer on this, and it is worth reading before you accept anyone’s theory about a secret penalty. We go through it properly, including how to tell from your own analytics whether a video was made ineligible, in what a TikTok shadowban actually is.
The things people blame that are usually not it
- Deleting and reposting. It resets the video’s history and starts it from a cold audience. It does not give it a second chance at the same test.
- Posting at the wrong minute. Timing moves results at the margin. It does not explain a video that got 300 views when your others get 8,000.
- Using too many hashtags. Measured across 2.3 million posts, hashtag use came out associated with more views and more interactions, not fewer.
- Watching your own video. Your own view is one view. It changes nothing about how the video is tested.
Your post is finished sooner than you think
Metricool’s 2026 study found that posts collect 96% of their total reach and nearly 98% of their total interactions within their first ten days. TikTok’s long tail is real but small.
Practically, that means a two week old post is not coming back, and refreshing it is the least productive thing you can do with the time. It also means the diagnosis on this page should be run on your last five or ten posts as a group. One video with no likes is noise. Five in a row is a pattern.
Before you conclude something is wrong with your account
The same dataset compared early 2025 with early 2026 and found average views per post down 31.30% and interactions down 31.17%, while the number of videos being posted rose 72.10%. More people posting more often into a feed that did not grow to match.
If your likes per video are down roughly a third on last year, that is the platform, not you. The number that survives this is the rate, because both halves of it fell together. Compare your rate across time and ignore the raw counts when you are trying to work out whether something changed.
If the likes were there and then vanished
A like count that goes down is a different thing again. Usually it is people un-liking or accounts being deleted, and the movement is small. When it is large and sudden, the common cause is TikTok removing inauthentic engagement, which it does in sweeps rather than continuously.
That matters most to anyone who has bought engagement from a cheap panel. Likes delivered in a rush from low quality accounts are the ones that disappear, and the video is left with the same view count and a lower like count than it started with. We wrote about what actually happens to bought engagement, and what it costs when it goes wrong, in the risks of fake engagement.
The one part of this that is a social proof problem
There is a floor effect worth naming. A video showing zero or two likes tells the next viewer that nobody else thought it was worth reacting to, and people act on that in the half second before they decide to keep watching. It is circular, it is unfair to good videos, and it is real.
If a post is sitting at zero, our free TikTok likes puts 25 on a video you choose, once every 30 days, for nothing. Take the offer for what it is. It removes the empty-count problem so the video is judged on itself, and that is the entire claim. It does not change how TikTok distributes the video, and if the video is being seen and ignored, 25 likes will not fix the reason. The page says the same thing.
We sell likes as well as giving them away, so weigh that. It is also why this page does not point you at the paid version: if a video is getting views and no likes, the answer is not to buy the missing likes. The answer is in the list at the top.
A working order to run the checks
- Compute likes divided by views. Under 2% is case one. Above 5% with low views is case two.
- For case one, watch your own video as a stranger and find the second where you would have left.
- For case two, check your analytics for the reach source and read the eligibility standards before assuming a penalty.
- Run the check across ten posts, not one.
- Compare rates over time, never raw counts against last year.
