Why you cannot see an Instagram profile picture in full size inside the app
Wherever an avatar appears in Instagram it is drawn as a small circle, cropped to fit that slot. Tapping it opens the account’s story if there is one, and otherwise does nothing. There is no view, zoom or save option anywhere in the interface, and that applies to your own picture as much as anyone else’s.
A bigger file does exist. Instagram keeps several versions of every avatar and serves whichever one fits the space on screen, which in the app is a 150 pixel circle. The largest version it serves to anyone who is not signed in is 320 by 320, more than four times the pixels of that circle, and that is what this Instagram profile picture viewer asks for. Anything larger sits behind a signed-in session, which is not something we will ask you for.
Screenshotting is the usual workaround and it is a poor one. A screenshot captures the picture at the size it was displayed, already circle cropped and already compressed, then saves it at your screen’s resolution. You end up with a blurry circle rather than the square original, and no amount of editing afterwards puts back detail that was never in the file.
Nor is there a setting to change. This is not a preference hidden somewhere in the app, and it is not different on iPhone, Android or the Instagram website. The only way to reach the full size profile image is to request it directly, which is what this page does for you.

Safari sometimes opens the picture in a new tab rather than saving it. If that happens:
